SOUTHERN SECTION CURRENT EVENTS

08/13/25 - Southern Section Meeting & Training at the North East Community Center, Chesapeake Beach

Come out to support the Section and enhance your knowledge!  Two classes will be offered:

  

Excavation Trenching and Shoring Safety - TRE 7857-24-09: All Operators, (Non-Process), 7 hours (1.5X): Instructor, Terry Bradley, MRWA

Class Description: Excavation and trenching are among the most hazardous construction operations. Students will be introduced to the requirements of the OSHA Excavation Standard, 29 CFR 1926 (Subpart P). The subjects covered will be the causes of trench failure, soil classification, trench protection systems, hazardous atmospheres and conditions, inspection techniques, and competent person responsibilities. Additional instruction will be given on: tests used to classify soil types in the field, the different methods of cave-in protection; selecting proper shoring methods using the provided OSHA tables; and the methodology used to minimize these and other hazards.  NOTE: There are two options for this class. You may register for the training only at no cost. However, if you would like morning refreshments and catered lunch, there will be a $45 fee

Backflow Prevention and Cross Connection Control . TRE Pending: Instructor: Carroll "Chip" Matthews, WSSC

Class Description: This course is designed to provide the participant with a basic understanding of cross-connection control and backflow prevention. The course covers terminology, methods & mechanisms for preventing backflow, backflow prevention theory, Utility methods of on-property and water distribution system protection, cross-connection control program organization and operation, inspecting for cross-connections, fire sprinkler systems, backflow assembly testing (theory only, no wet lab included), dual check valves, thermal expansion, water distribution system vulnerability, and an overview of security and fire hydrants.

  

Registration is online only and must be completed by August 8, 2025.

Class: The Toughest Water & Wastewater Pump Applications. Course Codes 2/6/2541, 363-88-09, and 08/9/4334 (Process) 7 hours. 

07/27/24 - Member Appreciation Event - Clements, MD

The Southern Section hosted a Section Membership Picnic at Bowles Farm.  The event, which drew 75 members, their families, and friends, was a resounding success, offering a perfect blend of delicious food, activities, and member interaction.  Bowles Farm provided a delectable spread including hot dogs, hamburgers, a selection of sides, and desserts. But what would a picnic in Southern Maryland be without steamed crabs, freshly steamed on-site by Robbie Newton of Hollywood, Maryland.  Door prizes were awarded throughout the day and there was a 50/50 drawing.  We look forward to next year's event!
